Save-On-Foods is part of the Overwaitea
Food Group, a Western Canadian organization which got its start
in 1915 in New Westminster, British Columbia, when founder
RC Kidd became famous for innovative merchandising practices
like selling 18 ounces of tea for the price of 16. Customers
dubbed his grocery the “Over-weight-tea” store
and launched our 92-year old tradition of providing more to
customers.
In 1982, the Overwaitea Food Group opened its
first six Save-On-Foods stores in B.C.’s Lower Mainland
and Fraser Valley. It marked the first time a Western Canadian
retailer had introduced natural foods departments, exclusive
meat programs, wholesale sections, in-store cosmetic departments,
in-store banking facilities, and full-service bookstores under
one roof.
By 1985, the stores also included pharmacies
and, a year later, the Overwaitea Food Group became the first
Western retailer to keep its doors open until midnight, seven
days a week.
We opened our first Save-On-Foods store in Alberta
in 1990, at Mayfield Common in Edmonton. Wanting to give more
back to customers, we launched our first loyalty card in 1992,
which later evolved to Save-On-More.
Over the last decade,
Save-On-Foods has continued its ongoing expansion throughout
Western Canada. Today, Save-On-Foods operates 50 stores in B.C. and 20 in
Alberta, and each one excels in anticipating and responding
to our customers’ ever-changing expectations.
