Flax & Oats for Heart Health & Diabetes

  1. February is Heart Health Month and a great time to include more heart healthy foods in your diet including oats and flax.
    - Oats contain a soluble fibre called beta-glucan that helps to lower cholesterol.
    - Flax contains plant omega-3s that lower cholesterol and may also help to lower blood pressure.

  2. Here are some tasty ways to get more flax and oats in your diet:
    - Start your day with a bowl of oatmeal
    - Steel cut and old fashioned oats are the best picks
    - If you use instant oatmeal, add 2 tablespoons of oat bran for added fibre
    - Sprinkle oat bran or ground flaxseed on cereal, yogurt, fruit or salad
    - Oat bran and ground flaxseed can also be substituted for some of the flour in baking
