Cool Fruit Salsas

Fruit salsas make colorful condiments with a blend of fresh tasting flavours. The sweetness of fruit paired with the hot flavour of jalapeños makes fresh fruit salsa especially refreshing with your favourite grilled fish, chicken, seafood or beef. Fruit salsas are very versatile, serve as a condiment at your next barbecue, with tortilla chips, low fat cheese and cracker platter or roasted garlic.

Basic Fruit Salsa Recipe

500 to 750 mL fruit (see below), chopped 2 to 3 cups
60 mL red onion, finely diced ¼ cup
60 mL fresh cilantro, finely chopped ¼ cup
30 to 45 mL lime juice 2 to 3 tbsp
1 jalapeño, finely diced 1

Variations:

  • Avocado: 1 mango, 1 avocado, 2 medium tomatoes, 3 minced garlic cloves
  • Berry Salsa: 2 cups strawberries or raspberries, 1 minced garlic clove• Black Bean and Fruit Salsa: 1 medium mango or 3 peaches, 1 can (14 oz/398 mL) black beans, rinsed and drained
  • Citrus Salsa: 1 cup papaya, 1 cup orange, 1 cup pink grapefruit
  • Grilled Pineapple and Onion Salsa: 1 cup each canned pineapple and onion rings. Lightly oil and grill on barbecue.
  • Kiwi Salsa: 1 cup kiwi and 1 cup strawberries
  • Mango Salsa: 2 to 3 medium mangoes
  • Melon Salsa: 1 cup cantaloupe, 1 cup watermelon and 1 cup cucumber, omit cilantro and replace with 2 tbsp (30 mL) freshly chopped parsley
  • Nectarine Salsa: 2 cups nectarine or 1 cup nectarine and 1 cup peach
  • Papaya and Bell Pepper: 1 cup papaya and 1 cup red bell pepper
  • Pineapple and Mango Salsa: 1 cup pineapple and 1 cup mango
  • Tropical Salsa: 2 kiwis, 1 cup mango and 1 cup papaya
  • Watermelon Salsa: 2 cups watermelon, 1 cup jicama or 1 cup red bell pepper
