Cherries
May help prevent: arthritis, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure,
inflammation, stroke
Red cherries are low in fat, cholesterol-free and rich in fibre, potassium,
vitamin A and C. This team of nutrients contributes to reducing the risk
of cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure. The rich deep-red
anthocyanin pigments found in cherries have potent anti-inflammatory
abilities that may prevent arthritis and relieve its symptoms. These
deep-red pigments also help to fight heart disease and stroke by blocking
the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, reducing blood clots, and reducing
inflammation that contributes to the build-up of plaque. As well, cherries
contain a flavonoid called terpenoid that appears to fight cancer and
combat tumors.
Action Tip: Cherries are delicious as is and add wonderful colour to fruit
salads, baked goods and rich flavour to fruit salsas served over meat
and poultry.
