Currants,
dried
May help prevent: cancer, heart disease, infection, inflammation,
intestinal disease
Dried currants are very small raisins made from black grapes and contain
many of their great health benefits. The anthocyanin pigments found in
currants provide its rich deep colour, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory
properties. These rich pigments and other flavonoids found in dried currants
inhibit tumor and cancer growth. The fibre content in dried currants
helps to lower cholesterol, fight cancer, prevent and manage diarrhea,
and prevent intestinal disease. Dried currants also supply potassium,
calcium, iron, vitamin A and C to protect the heart, fight infection
and cancer.
Action Tip: Dried currants, also known as ‘zante currants’ resemble
tiny raisins but have a stronger, tarter flavour. They are also available
fresh as champagne grapes. Dried currants add delicious flavour to baked
goods, trail mix and salads.
