Pecans
May help prevent: cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis
Numerous research
studies indicate that those who eat small amounts of nuts on a regular
basis have dramatically lower levels of heart disease
and lower levels of ‘lousy’ LDL cholesterol. The ability
of pecans to combat heart disease and cancer comes from their large storehouse
of nutrients. Pecans supply nineteen vitamins and minerals including
cancer fighting vitamin C and beta-carotene, homocysteine lowering B
vitamins, immune boosting zinc, and bone-building calcium, magnesium
and phosphorous. These nuts also deliver both alpha- and gamma-tocopherols,
potent antioxidants that protect against heart disease and cancer. Besides
their many micronutrients, pecans supply hefty amounts of phytosterols,
cholesterol like plant compounds that lower lousy ‘LDL’ cholesterol,
reduce the formation of plaque on artery walls and inhibit the growth
of cancer cells. In addition, pecans contain healthy monounsaturated
fat to fight against cancer and heart disease and lower blood pressure.
In fact, one ounce of pecans provides more of the disease-fighting
oleic acid than one tablespoon of olive oil.
Action Tip: Pecans are
typically enjoyed in dessert and pies at Christmas. There’s no
need to wait until the holidays to savor the satisfying flavour and
health benefits of pecans, they can be enjoyed tossed in salads,
trail mix, pasta sauces, cereal, or baked in muffins and loaves. They
are especially flavourful when toasted.
