Measures undertaken by Save-On-Foods in response to COVID-19

In 178 stores in four provinces and one territory, Save-On-Foods is taking extraordinary measures to do its part to contain the spread of COVID-19 and meet the unprecedented consumer demand on its stores and online shopping business.

We have, and always will, do the right thing to protect the health and safety of our team members and customers. Should one of our team members test positive for COVID-19, under the guidance of our public health authorities we have a strong plan to make sure that we follow all the right processes. Over and above our already increased daily cleaning protocols, ongoing plans include deep cleaning and sanitizing of all impacted areas, closing specific departments or stores for deep cleaning as necessary, as well as all high touch common areas for staff and customers around the store. We will work closely with the local health authorities to notify any team members and customers whom the health authority deems may be at risk of exposure including recommended next steps. As always, we continue to encourage team members and customers who are feeling ill to stay home.

Stores

  • We’re increasing our already high standards on food safety, sanitation and cleanliness
  • We’re encouraging our team member to wash their hands regularly and frequently disinfecting high-touch surfaces
  • We’re encouraging social distancing in all of our stores with decals separated by two metres
  • We’re limiting the number of customers in our stores at peak times to ensure adequate social distance between them
  • We’re installing Plexiglas shields in pharmacies and at checkouts as quickly as we can
  • We’ve introduced a shopping hour for seniors and those most at risk from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. in all stores
  • We’ve temporarily suspended bottle returns and the use of reusable shopping bags in store
  • We’re looking at supplemental activities including one-way arrows in narrow aisles where it is most beneficial for the customers and our team members
  • At checkout, to minimize handling of payment devices, customers can now use contactless payment for purchases of up to $250 for most credit cards.
  • We’ve closed our bulk foods areas, hot buffets, olive bars, and customer bread-slicing stations, among other self-service offerings.

Inventory

  • We are not experiencing a widespread shortage of food
  • We are asking our customers to maintain their normal shopping habits and buy only what they need
  • Panic buying makes it challenging to get products from our suppliers to our warehouses to our stores fast enough
  • We are enforcing limits on high-demand items

Team members

  • We’re directing team members who are ill or who have potentially been exposed to self-isolate
  • We’re working with team members on a case-by-case basis to minimize any interruption in pay
  • We paid team members a bonus of $2 per hour for every hour worked during the height of the pandemic. As our Provinces move into their reopening plans, we’ve shifted to providing our team with a long-term benefit that provides them and their families with a 10% discount on their groceries or 30X More Rewards points.
  • Over and above the $2 per hour bonus pay, we awarded team members a $50 or $100 gift card in recognition of hours worked.

Online shopping

  • We’ve added delivery vans to our fleet to keep up with the surge in online shopping
  • We’ve changed to contactless pickup and delivery processes to ensure team member and customer safety
  • We’re asking customers who can shop in-store to do so and leave the delivery option available for those who aren’t able to get to the store, including seniors, people with disabilities, and those with the novel Coronavirus

Offices

  • We’ve temporarily closed our offices to visitors
  • We have a task force that’s guiding the implementation of protocols to best protect our team members and customers in accordance with the advice of health authorities
  • Team members are working from home wherever possible
  • We’re encouraging social distancing at all times
