Balanced Breakfasts
Breakfast really is one of the most important meals of the day. Not only does it help us kick-start our body in the morning, but it is also one of the best ways to make sure we meet our fibre and nutrient needs through the day. We are going to talk about 3 keyways you can use to improve your breakfast intake, including planning ahead of time, keeping it simple and trying several types of breakfasts.
- Plan
Planning is one of the easiest ways to make sure you have something to eat in the morning, especially when you are on the go and having breakfast at your desk. One of our favourite ways to do this is to prep your breakfast the night before by making a batch of items for the week. This can include throwing together some jars of overnight oats, making a batch of mini egg muffins or as simple as boiling some hard-boiled eggs.
- Keep it simple
When aiming for a balanced breakfast, you want to include something that will give you energy (carbohydrates) and fibre, as well as protein. However, this does not mean it needs to be something elaborate. Three examples of balanced, but simple, breakfasts include:
- Greek yogurt with berries and granola
- Scrambled egg with whole wheat toast
- Whole grain cereal with 2% milk
- Try different breakfasts
Breakfast is not always the easiest meal for many people to eat. Some people do not feel hungry in the morning, or even feel nauseous if they do eat or smell food right after waking up. A few ways to combat this are by mixing up your breakfast choices. If you cannot handle anything with a strong smell, choose a cold cereal. If you need something that is smaller, bite-size try slicing up some fruit and eating it with nut butter. Or, if you cannot eat anything at all, blend up a protein and nutrient-rich smoothie with frozen fruits and soft tofu and drink your breakfast!
When you can start your day off with a balanced breakfast, you have a higher chance of reaching your fibre and nutrient goals throughout the day. Breakfast not only helps your metabolism, but it can also support better concentration and energy through your day.
