Over the last few years, the ketogenic, or ‘keto’ diet has gained a lot of popularity. Whether this diet term is new to you or not, the diet has similar variations to other carb conscious diets that have grown in popularity in the past, such as the Atkin’s diet. So, let us get down to the details of what the keto diet means, what research exists behind it, and what foods are included or eliminated with this lifestyle.
What is the keto diet?
The diet lifestyle, called keto, includes a low level of carbohydrates, moderate protein, and high fat intake. Ideally, you want to aim for as much healthy fat in your diet as possible like vegetable oils, avocados, fatty fish and flax and hemp seeds. The concept of how this diet is used for health and weight is that the body’s metabolism system switches to using fat, instead of carbohydrates, as its key nutrient for energy.
What does the research say?
Ketosis is a metabolic state in the body where your body starts producing ketones. Ketones are a biproduct produced by your liver. When you enter ketosis, your brain can start to use ketones for energy instead of the usual source of carbohydrates, or glucose. Many studies in the past have shown some effectiveness of a ketogenic diet with individuals living with epilepsy, resulting in a decrease in the number of seizures that occur. Although not conclusive, and more studies are needed, more recent research in the field is showing possible benefits of the keto diet with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and certain cancers.
What foods can you eat, and which foods need to be eliminated on a keto diet?
Although some forms of keto diets are stricter than others, the general keto-diet follower tends to be more lenient with some carbohydrate consumption in their meals. Some keto-friendly foods are animal protein based such as lean poultry, fish, eggs, and cheese. Other foods to complement your diet are nuts, seeds, avocados, and vegetable oils. When consuming vegetables, the keto diet encourages lower starch vegetables, such as leafy greens, tomatoes, and peppers.
Foods to avoid on the keto diet may include those higher in sugar or carbohydrates, such as juices, cereals, starchy vegetables, or high-sugar sauces.
When choosing to follow any diet that requires restrictions of food groups or categories, it is encouraged to seek advice from your physician or dietitian to ensure you are not falling deficient of important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
