Organic Foods
In Canada, you must carry a certification to claim organic on your product. Although, the word organic can sometimes be confusing for people, and be mixed into play with words like ‘natural’ or free-from, there are rules and regulations in place to protect the use of this word. This blog will address a few of the common myths and misconceptions of organic including: organic vs. natural, what the rules are around organic foods, if eating organic is better for your health and some organic food choices.
Let us start with organic versus natural. As mentioned above, in Canada, to be certified organic you must go through a regulatory process and meet certain criteria to become certified organic and claim that on your product. In contrast to this, natural is not a regulated term. Unfortunately, this means that any product can claim to be ‘natural’ without having to necessarily explain its reasoning for the claim. In general, most products you do see with the term natural will either be in their most natural state as possible, and/or not include any artificial or undesirable ingredients. Therefore, one of the biggest differences between the two terms is that one is regulated, and one is not.
In terms of the processes required to be certified organic, it may differ depending on the product category. In general, the product needs to be mostly, over 95% made from organic ingredients to be considered organic. There is also a limited set of pesticides that can be used on the product. Furthermore, all products that are certified organic in Canada are also non-GMO.
The research on whether Organic products are healthier for you or not is up in the air. Eating any fruit or vegetable will give you nutrients good for your health, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. There are some studies that have shown that organic foods can have small increases in amounts of these nutrients. The most impactful reason to consume organic foods may be closer to protecting the health of the soil, and planet. A lot of organic farming practices can be regenerative to the soil and help support longevity and lower carbon emissions.
What are some popular organic food choices? According to the Environmental Working Group, some organic choices you may want to make (linked to pesticide amounts) include strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, and apples. Others that are likely to be ok to forego organic options (due to lower pesticide residues) are corn, avocadoes, onions, and sweet peas.
